Scholastic News

For scholastic news we read the story and then we have a paper and we do the questions on the paper. We answer the question on the paper.  We do this every Friday.  We learn about non-fiction and how to answer questions.

Equal Groups

This week we are beginning to work on equal groups in math.

Students took a group of objects and divided them up into smaller groups, so that each smaller group had the same number of objects!

Inventions

Hello students this week we have been learning about Tomas Edison as we all know he invented the light bulb, carbon transmitter, and phonograph. Did you ever think about inventing something useful like robot helpers or  cars that run on solar power? If you are creative, anything is possible.

Schema

Team 184 has been working on schema.  Schema is what you already know, main ideas from books you've read and movies you've seen, memories and events in your life. We have been making schema posters about our lives. Paying attention to your schema helps you as a reader because it helps you make connections and understand the story better. Summarizing, Main Idea, Retelling, and Theme

Today we talked about summarizing, main ideas, retelling, and themes.

Here's what each one means:

1. The main idea is what the story is about.

2. Retelling is when you tell the story again with as many details as you remember.

3. The theme of a story is what the author wants you to learn.

4.  Summarizing is retelling the most important things in the story, including the problem and solution.

The Harvest Birds

Our story of the week last week was called The Harvest Birds, by Blanca Lopez de Mariscal.

Here, Juan is visited by a zanate bird!

In this story, a young man follows his dream of raising crops, even though no one believed he could. He got help from some unlikely friends, including some very helpful zanate birds!

Students act out The Harvest Birds together.

After reading the story together a few times, we had fun acting it out as a class.
The narrators help keep the story moving!

Red Ribbon Week

Last week was
Red Ribbon Week at
Ox Bow Elementary!

On Friday, our class went outside to tie red ribbons onto the fence by the soccer field.

These ribbons help remind us to stay drug free!

During the week, we also wore silly socks, brought in canned goods for a local food bank, and "teamed up against drugs" by wearing our favorite teams' jerseys and hats!

We are proud to be a drug-free community!

Macaroni Commas!

What are your favorite foods?

We worked on understanding that when we write lists, we have to have commas in our writing! Instead of just writing the commas, we used macaroni to help us remember where they go in a list!
