indpendent reading

Team 184 has been working on independent reading. IDR (independent daily reading) is  when everybody gets a book and they read for 30 minutes.

Sometimes the teacher pulls kids and works with them.

We each have a number, it's either odd or even. When the date is odd all of the odd numbered people get to go on the floor or under their desk. If the number is even then all the even numbered people get to sit on the floor or under their desk.

PAT Time

Almost every Friday, we have 30 minutes of PAT time.

PAT time is to learn, but have fun while doing it.  During PAT time, we experience things.  We get PAT points during the week for being extra coopertive, extra quiet, or extra efficient.  We work together to get points.  If we are too loud or uncooperative we lose points. =(

During PAT time, we usually do something with science or art.

PAT time is a time to be creative and investigate.

The Harvest Birds

Our story of the week last week was called The Harvest Birds, by Blanca Lopez de Mariscal.

Here, Juan is visited by a zanate bird!

In this story, a young man follows his dream of raising crops, even though no one believed he could. He got help from some unlikely friends, including some very helpful zanate birds!

Students act out The Harvest Birds together.

After reading the story together a few times, we had fun acting it out as a class.
The narrators help keep the story moving!

Red Ribbon Week

Last week was
Red Ribbon Week at
Ox Bow Elementary!

On Friday, our class went outside to tie red ribbons onto the fence by the soccer field.

These ribbons help remind us to stay drug free!

During the week, we also wore silly socks, brought in canned goods for a local food bank, and "teamed up against drugs" by wearing our favorite teams' jerseys and hats!

We are proud to be a drug-free community!

Macaroni Commas!

What are your favorite foods?

We worked on understanding that when we write lists, we have to have commas in our writing! Instead of just writing the commas, we used macaroni to help us remember where they go in a list!
